Description

The Thanjavur Ekhanda Veena is revered as the highest tier of the Saraswati Veena, distinguished by its unique “Ekhanda” (single-piece) construction. Unlike standard models that are assembled from separate parts, the entire body of this instrument—including the large resonator (Kudam), the long neck (Dandi), and the ornamental head (Yali)——is painstakingly hollowed and shaped from a single, massive block of seasoned jackwood. This seamless architecture allows for superior tonal continuity, as the sound vibrations travel through a single piece of wood without the interruption of joints, resulting in the rich, mellow, and deeply resonant “Nadam” that Thanjavur is famous for.

The creation of an Ekhanda Veena is a labor-intensive process that can take up to 20 to 30 days of continuous hand-crafting by hereditary artisans. The wood is typically sourced from mature jackfruit trees in regions like Panruti, chosen for its excellent acoustic properties and its ability to age beautifully over decades. Because it is a genuine Thanjavur product, it carries the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring the use of traditional materials and techniques that have been preserved for centuries. These instruments are often finished with a natural polish that showcases the yellow hue of the jackwood, which gradually deepens into a rich dark red or brown as the instrument ages.

Musically, the Thanjavur Ekhanda Veena provides a “complete” experience, featuring the standardized 24-fret system that enables a full three-octave range for performing all 72 melakarta ragas. The brass frets are meticulously embedded in a bed of hardened beeswax and charcoal powder, creating the essential scalloped feel that allows musicians to pull the strings laterally for the fluid Gamakas (oscillations) that define Carnatic music. For the advanced practitioner or professional artist, the Ekhanda Veena is more than just an instrument; it is a sacred investment in tonal excellence and cultural heritage
